FAQ

After Brexit, how long can UK citizens stay in Spain on holiday?
UK passport holders get 90 days in any 180-day window across the whole Schengen area (Schengen Borders Code, Article 6). This applies whether you enter through Spain, France, or any other Schengen state — the days are pooled.
Does time at my Spanish holiday home count against my 90 days?
Yes. Every calendar day you spend sleeping in Spain counts as 1 Schengen day, regardless of whether you flew in or drove over from the UK.
What if I transit through a Schengen airport on my way elsewhere?
Connecting through a Schengen airport without passing immigration control typically does not consume a Schengen day. Routing through, say, Madrid to Morocco with an airside transit does not count. Routing through with a change of airport or an overnight layover does.
Can I get a longer visa to stay more than 90 days?
Yes. The Spanish non-lucrative visa, the Portuguese D7 retirement visa, or a Golden Visa (where available) can grant longer stays. Long-term solutions take 60-180 days to apply for from your home country.
Will I be tax-resident in Spain after a long holiday?
Maybe. Spain's general rule is 183 days of presence in a calendar year triggers tax residency, but HMRC-style ties tests and shorter-stay rules can complicate this. We provide an informational estimate in our calculator; speak to a qualified tax advisor for your situation.
